Homeschooling on One Income

Homeschooling on One Income

One of the biggest questions I keep coming back to as I research homeschooling is, Can we actually afford this?

We are a one-income family, and that reality shapes almost every decision we make.

Hi, I’m Amanda, and right now I’m in the very early stages of exploring homeschooling for our family. My oldest is preparing to start kindergarten, and while we are still planning on letting her go to public school, I’ve been thinking ahead about what first grade and beyond might look like if we choose to homeschool.

The cost of homeschooling is one of the first things that made me pause. When you start researching homeschooling online, it can look very different depending on where you land. Some families have expensive curriculum setups, stocked homeschool rooms, subscriptions, programs, and supplies that feel beautifully organized. Do I have to have all that to homeschool? Is that the only way? If so, homeschooling would be out of reach for us. So right now, I’m in the process of learning what homeschooling actually costs! Not the pretty Instagram version, but the real-life version.

I’ve started noticing that homeschooling doesn’t have one fixed price. It can range from almost nothing to quite expensive, depending on the choices a family makes. That alone has been eye-opening. There are free resources, library programs, online materials, and everyday learning opportunities that don’t require a big budget. And there are also paid curricula, structured programs, and more that can add up quickly.

What I keep coming back to is this idea. I don’t want homeschooling to feel like something we can only do if we spend a lot of money. If we choose this path, I want it to feel sustainable for our real life, not overwhelming or financially stressful.

That means I’m currently looking at things like:
– Free or low-cost curriculum options
– Library resources
– Educational activities we can do at home
– What supplies are actually necessary versus optional
– And what homeschooling could look like in a simple, realistic way

I don’t have answers yet. I’m still in the research phase, still learning what’s possible, and still trying to understand how families make this work in real life on one income. But I do know I want to approach it thoughtfully, instead of feeling like we have to buy everything upfront to “do it right.”

If you’re also wondering whether homeschooling can work financially for your family, especially on a tight or single-income budget, I hope you know you’re not alone in that question. I’m right there too and I’ll be sharing what I find along the way, in case it helps another family who’s asking the same questions.
